I confess that I wanted to cut the Peonies and gather them into my studio. However, I am too much of a gardner and they looked so beautiful where they were. So I didn't. The next day, I bought some at the Granville Island Farmer's Market and brought them to the studio to paint.

The Ponies were still there in the evening when I returned. Now, their heads were relieved of the weight of the rain water and a short burst of sun had them more fragrant than morning. I imagined them in a vase. The painting is 24"H x 24" W
The Peonies were heavy with rain from the previous night but fragrant and lovely. They would not last. The painting is 20"H x 24" W.
Last summer, suddenly there were these gorgeous Peonies in the garden. The next day I came to photograph them but it had rained heavily during the night and the heads were bent under the weight but the colours were even better. I could just see them, painted in drippy encaustic. I took many photographs because I knew the blossoms would not last very long, certainly not long enough to paint. These are the paintings done in the studio based on the photographs. This painting, a diptych, is 16"H x 36" W
